Week 7: The Impenetrable Beverage

Before I had embarked on this journey- when I initially reached out to Fionn about the possibility of working together- the first question I asked him off the bat was if I was allowed to drink coffee.

I love the stuff.

When he told me I could have all the coffee I wanted, I said let’s do it!

As well as being another hugely productive 7 days, this has been a week of revelations.

Every morning for the past 7 weeks I have been enjoying a bulletproof coffee with my breakfast, or as a breakfast replacement. I would also sometimes have one in the afternoon, or before training. The delicious mixture of coffee, grass fed butter, and coconut oil is something to behold, offering efficient and effective fuel for mind and body.

But, for 6 of those 7 weeks, I had been doing it all wrong!

It’s always nice to treat yourself from time to time, and last Sunday I indulged in some quality Italian ground coffee and a coffee press, from the High Street Market in Itaewon.

To say that I was excited to bring it for a test run, would be an understatement. I sprinted home.

I had meticulously prepared everything; the perfect ratio of butter to coconut oil waited patiently at the bottom of my favourite mug, as the alluring fragrance of the freshly brewed mediteranean coffee filled my tiny apartment. I even lit some candles to set the mood! (I joke)

I could have been sitting in a café in Rome for all I knew.

È stato magico!

Just as I was about to pour in the coffee and stir the ingredients with a spoon, I had an epiphany.

My mind shot back back to when my good friend Robbie began drinking bulletproof coffee last year, and at the time he explained the importance of blending the mixture. Robbie is an inter-county footballer, and as you could imagine, he is always on top of his nutrition. So, I always take interest in what he has to say.

Stopping myself, I carefully transferred the ingredients from the bottom of the cup to the blender, and excitedly started the pour.

As the blender whizzed into life, the dark liquid immediately turned a shade of golden brown.

Curiosity, aroused.

The viscosity and texture of the liquid that flowed gracefully from the blender was that of a latte, complete with foamy head. It was creamy, smooth, and begged to be drank.

I obliged, and just as the foam hit my lips, my life as I knew it changed forever.

I can’t remember my exact words, but it was somewhere along the lines of, ‘holy f*ckin’ shite!’

As I gleefully discarded my spoon into the sink, never again to be used for the purpose of stirring coffee, I could immediately relate to how Mr. Edison must have felt when he blew out his candle for the last time.

And needless to say, I had to immediately share this ground breaking discovery with all my friends on Snapchat! Thomas my good man, we’ve come a long way!

The dominance of Week 7 concluded with a 32 km dart along The Han River, fuelled only by- you guessed it- a bulletproof coffee.

As I stand at the doorstep of Week 8, I imagine how amazing it would be to wash down my giant Toblerone with a freshly brewed cup of fuel.

It’ll have to wait, I’m afraid.

On March 20th I will be running the Seoul Marathon in aid of Aware. If you would like to make a donation, please feel free to jump over to my JustGiving page. It’s for a great cause! Thank you so much for the support..!
